Local Profile – George Waldrum


The early years. George was born and raised in Toronto with five sisters and one brother, where he attended school. Following graduation from Toronto Normal School, George was a part-time student in the summer, week-ends and evenings. In 1957, received a B.A. Degree from University of Western Ontario; In 1958, a B. Ed. Degree, and in 1962, a Master of Ed. Degree, both from the Ontario College of Education, University of Toronto.

George married Mary and had two children, Cheryl and Gary, and four grand children. Clearly, the best decision George ever made was to ask Mary to marry him. They celebrate their 52nd anniversary in 2004.

From 1950-61, George was a teacher and Principal in five public schools in Guelph. From 1961-72, he held positions of increasing responsibilities from Inspector of Public Schools to Assistant Deputy Minister, Education Administration Division.

From 1972-79, George held the esteemed position of Deputy Minister - Ontario Ministry of Education. In 1979, he became the Chairman and Deputy Minister of Ontario Civil Service Commission

From 1984-85, he was Deputy Minister, Human Resources Planning, Government of Ontario until he retired from Ontario Public Service on February 25, 1985.

From 1985 – 95, George was involved in consulting Services in Education and Human Resource Management to Government Sector Organizations and International Agencies: School Boards; Departments of Education; Universities; U.N.E.S.C.O.; U.S.Aid; C.E.S.O., British Council; World Bank; Government of Canada; Government of Lesotho; Government of Western Australia; Government of Indonesia.

In 1985, George joined the Rotary Club of Parry Sound, and held the position of President in 1990-91.

George attended the 1991 Rotary International in Portland, Oregon. He has attended many District Conferences. He has chaired Nevada; "Rock, Run, and Roll", Fundraising for "Friends" from start to finish, and is on the "Helping Kids Play Committee". Known as the "Gingerbread Man" and "Rotary Hat and Shirt Man,” George brings gingerbread men to the Christmas party each members. George volunteers when and where possible.

George has been the recipient of many awards through his career – too many to mention here, but they include Ontario Volunteerism Award in 2001, Medal in 1977 to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's reign, 1967 Centennial Medal on the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada.
