Local Profile – Margaret Beatty

We shall not cease from exploration and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.

Margaret Beatty believes that T.S. Elliott's quotation above suits her perfectly. Her family started in Parry Sound and she has ended up here after all.

Margaret's great grandfather came to Parry Sound in 1863 at the age of 29 when he purchased the Gibson Lumber Mill in Parry Sound. He also bought a large tract of land and built a store, a church, and several roads, and sold property. As a staunch Methodist, he added the contingency that no alcohol should be consumed on any property he might sell. At the time, that might have been reasonable because there were no police and no insurance, and life was meant to be church, home, work, and nothing else. Unfortunately, the contingency written into the land deals lasted many years into the future.

Margaret grew up in Kingston where she earned her degree in French and German. Her 4th year university was spent in Europe, on the border of France and Germany. She began her working life teaching conversational French to Grades 7 and 8, then applied to Air Canada where she worked as an in-flight attendant. She enjoyed many years overseas with special assignments because of her language ability.

Margaret returned to school – this time, Ryerson – studying Landscape Architecture from which she graduated in 1982. She earned her real estate licence in 1986, and worked successfully in real estate in Toronto for 15 years. She volunteered with many community service agencies during those years.

Margaret has now retired to Parry Sound and has joined the Rotary Club. Welcome, Margaret! We're so pleased to have you with us!
